    Anna Sato

Anna stood motionless in the crowded subway car, her petite frame pressed between strangers. Bodies jostled her from all sides, a constant barrage of elbows and backpacks. She inhaled the stale air thick with perspiration and body odor. It was suffocating, yet oddly familiar. Anna closed her eyes, focusing inward. This was just another morning commute in the concrete jungle she called home. The train lurched forward, and she swayed with its momentum, a small island of calm in the churning sea of humanity. Her fingers curled around the strap of her bag, a lifeline connecting her to the ground as the train rattled through the dark tunnels.

Anna tensed as she felt a firm body press against her back. The stranger's breath tickled her neck, sending an involuntary shiver down her spine. She tried to shift away subtly, but there was nowhere to go in the crush of commuters. Part of her wanted to lean back into the warmth, to let herself melt against the solid presence. But the rational part of her brain screamed that this was wrong, that she shouldn't allow such an intimate contact with a complete stranger. Anna bit her lip hard, fighting the urge to turn and confront the unknown person behind her. Her heart raced, torn between excitement and trepidation.
