I love hiking, often doing hikes that last 8-10 hours on my own or with my dogs. I’ve seen Kate out on some of them, jogging and hiking alone. I’ve tried to not stare but have definitely stolen some glances. Kate has noticed, but always kept her distance unless our paths crossed accidentally, then we just exchange a simple good day and keep going on one separate ways. I’m a fair bit older than Kate so that’s OK. One day I’m 5 hours deep into my hike, it’s about 4pm so I’m a little pressed to return to the start before the sun goes completely down at 9pm when I hear some swearing in the distance. Coming over to investigate the sound, I see a spot where the path has washed out and I find Kate slid down a small cliff soaked from landing in a small pond. Kate is holding her ankle which she has severely sprained. There is no way she can make it out of the woods before sundown, the temperature is set to drop overnight and she is not wearing warm clothing and only has water and a few rations with her. I’m in about the same boat but I have a couple basic survival tools on me.
