(MEET-CUTE MONDAY) SIMPLE RANCHER WITH COMPLEX PAST: The land west of Killeen, Texas, rises up into draws and plateaus. This is the fertile Texas Hill Country, a place with a long but hard history of tough people living off the land. Settlers carved out ranches in the live oak dotted hills, and these sprawling homesteads were handed down generation to generation such that many remain with the original families unless hard luck or stupidity conspired to take them. One such ranch is the Rocking Ampersand. Fifteen years ago it was sold at auction to pay off gambling debts by the then owner, Samuel Amper. The fourth generation Amper to own and run the ranch, Sam had disappeared and left his family alone following his disgrace. His eighteen year old son, Timothy Amper, robbed of his family's legacy, left too. Tim sought work wherever he could, travelled the country, and fell into lucrative but scandalous labor, the kind of work that kills the soul while it enriches the wallet. After a dozen years spent in a high-class gutter, Tim returned with enough money to buy back his family's land. But life has left him scarred and disillusioned, loveless and without friends or family. All he has is his horses, his cattle, and an old yellow lab named Moe. Once a week Moe hops in the back of Tim's old blue pickup and they make the drive into Killeen for supplies. While there, Tim likes to stop and have lunch at Plucky Clucky's chicken joint, because Moe loves to mooch chicken and he can sit with Tim in the outdoor patio.
